PORTAGE– A growing number of moms about town have been gathering five mornings a week, babies in tow, to take part in a maternal and musical exercise extravaganza.
Fitness is the driving force behind the Stroller Strides meetings, but most of the moms say the friends they’ve made are just as important as the pounds they’ve lost.

Thirteen mothers and their babies ranging in age from 12 weeks to 2 years were part of Friday’s gathering. The moms moved nonstop during their workout, sometimes singing songs to their babies in strollers as the mothers did exercises in a large circle in the middle of the gym. Then it was off on a circular fitness parade around the facility, moms pushing strollers and working out at the same time.
Maureen Weston, 27, of Kalamazoo, is mother to 2-year-old May and owns the local franchise of Stroller Strides, which is based in San Diego. There are more than 600 Stroller Strides groups nationwide, three in Michigan. The Portage franchise was the first in the state when it was established in June 2006.

The group has 25 regular members, and anywhere from eight to 16 is the typical number that gather at 9 a.m. They gather at The Courthouse on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and at The Crossroads mall on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Workout sessions last an hour, followed by more activities for the babies and further fellowship for moms.

WHERE: Alternates between two Portage locations, The Courthouse Athletic Center and The Crossroads mall.
COST: Ranges from $10 for a single class to $175 for a three-month pass.
